The Amateur Athletic Union and the Presidential Youth Fitness Program

A consultant who advises Fortune 500 companies on millennial worker hiring, training, and retention, Randall Blum began his role as the president and CEO of Randall Blum Insight Consulting in 2018. Outside of his work, Randall “Randy” Blum is a sports official for the National Amateur Athletic Union (NAAU). Alongside formal events, the NAAU’s programs, including the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP), further its mission of greater youth involvement in sports.

NAAU, founded in 1888, initially served to standardize sports rules in the United States and train athletes for the Olympic Games. However, the organization switched priorities in 1978 after the passage of the Amateur Sports Act, promoting physical health and character building through sports for people of all skill levels and ages, especially young people.

In addition to events in dozens of sports year-round, the NAAU operates the PYFP in collaboration with Interactive Health Technologies (IHT) and the National Fitness Foundation (NFF). Beginning in 2012, these groups distributed training materials and grants to schools to reform physical education classes and shift priorities to personal fitness goals and lifelong health. To track students’ progress, participating teachers record PYFP data using IHT Spirit System software.
